How do I start using Red Hen Remote?
The steps for using Red Hen Remote on a Windows PC are very simple:
- Open your web browser and go to www.redhenremote.com.
- Type in your credentials.
- Click the application icon to launch your remote desktop.
- Log out of your remote desktop when you're finished working.
If you are using Red Hen Remote for the first time, there are three additional steps you must follow:
- Open your web browser and go to www.redhenremote.com.
- Type in your credentials.
- Download and install the ActiveX browser plugin.
- Click the application icon to launch your remote desktop.
- Configure your file security.
- Upload the data you want to use on your remote desktop.
- Log out of your remote desktop when you're finished working.
Here are the steps in detail. If you are not using a Windows PC, steps 1-4 may be different for you. Please see the Related Documents link below regarding non-Windows operating systems.
- Open your web browser and go to www.redhenremote.com.
- Launch Internet Explorer. If you are using an alternate browser (AOL, Firefox, etc.), please see the Related Documents link below.
- Type http://www.redhenremote.com into the address bar. Click Go.
- Type in your credentials.
- At the login page, type the username and password that you received from Red Hen Remote. Note that usernames are not case-sensitive but passwords are. Click Login.

- Download and install the ActiveX browser plugin.
- At this point, the web page will try to determine if you have the necessary ActiveX plug-in installed. If you do not have the plug-in installed, you should receive a pop-up prompting you to download and install it (image). If you do not receive the pop-up, you either already have the plug-in installed or your browser is blocking pop-ups. If you have pop-ups blocked (image), you may click on the Download the ICA web client here link (image) to manually select the client. Click the Install Citrix ICA Client for Win32 link.
- When prompted Do you want to run this software?, select Run (image).
- When prompted This will install Citrix Web Client. Do you wish to continue? click Yes (image).
- Click Yes to the license agreement (image).
- When prompted Setup completed successfully. You may need to restart your web browser to activate changes, click OK (image). Typically, you do not need to restart your computer after this install, but you may need to refresh your browser.
- Close the Citrix ICA Client for Win32 pop-up.
- Click the application icon to launch your remote desktop.
- You should now see a list of applications including a remote desktop named after your organization. Click on the icon to launch your remote desktop (image). The remote desktop opens up in front of the login web page. The web page is not tied to the remote desktop at this point and may be closed at any time.

- Configure your file security.
- When you first open your remote desktop, you should be presented with File Security dialog box (image). These settings determine what access you have to your local drives. If you permit access, you will be able to copy files to and from your local hard drive (C:, D:, etc.) to the remote desktop drives. We recommend selecting Full Access and Never ask me again. If you enable this access, you will be the only one who can see your local drives so there is no security risk. Click OK.

- Upload the data you want to use on your remote desktop.
- If you open My Computer on your remote desktop, you will see two server drives (H:, K:), and, if you have configured local drive access (step 5), you may see multiple local drives (image):
- H: is your home directory. You have exclusive access to this drive; no one else can access it.
- K: is your organization's shared drive. Everyone in your organization can access this drive, even if you are the only member of your organization. The K: drive contains one or two root folders:
- K:\Data: This is the main storage folder for your organization. If you have files you want everyone to have access to, post them here.
- K:\Clients: If you are a master organization associated with one or more client organizations, their shared folders will show up in K:\Clients folder.
- To copy data from your local drives to your server drives, open My Computer on your remote desktop, navigate to one of your local drives (C: shows up as V:, D: shows up as U:, etc.), copy the file you need, navigate to one of your server drives (H:, K:) and paste the data. The files will be copied across the internet from your PC to our servers. You can also drag and drop files from your local drives to server drives. - Log out of your remote desktop when you're finished working.
- When you are finished working on your remote desktop, be sure to log off properly. To log off, click the Start button within your remote desktop, and select Log off.. (image). If you click the X in the top right corner to close the remote desktop windows instead of logging off, your sessions will be disconnected instead of closed and you may experience re-connecting.
